How We Actually Review A Mobile Game

July 31, 2026 · Lukas Vogel

Readers occasionally ask how long we spend with a game before writing about it, and the honest answer is: longer than you'd probably guess. A review here doesn't go up until someone has played well past the tutorial.

The first thing we judge is the opening hour, because that's where most players decide to stay or leave. Then we push into the mid-game, where grinds and repetition tend to surface. If the core loop is still fun at that point, that tells us a lot.

We take notes constantly, especially about moments of friction, awkward controls, a progression wall, a confusing menu. Those small annoyances add up and they're exactly what a quick first impression tends to miss.

Only after all that do we settle on a rating, and even then we argue about it. The number is just shorthand; the words around it are where the real review lives.
