In Praise Of Games That Don't Stress You Out
There's a particular kind of game I reach for when the day has been too much, and it isn't the challenging one. It's the cozy simulation with no failure screen, no timers breathing down my neck, just a small world to tidy.
Harbor Tales is the current winner in that category for me. Rebuilding the little port, chatting with the locals, watching the town slowly brighten up, none of it demands anything. It gives, and that's the appeal.
People sometimes dismiss these games as not real games, which I think misses the point entirely. Removing pressure is a design choice, and doing it well is harder than it looks. A cozy game still needs rhythm and a reason to return.
If you've never tried the genre, start small with short sessions and let it set its own pace. Fighting a relaxing game to make it exciting is the fastest way to miss what it's offering.
